Ocean
Explorer Maps are published by Nigel Sitwell the former editor
and publisher of the British magazine Wildlife, who has led numerous wildlife
expeditions, including more than 12 Antarctic cruises, and writes regularly
on travel and natural history for leading publications.
Ocean
Explorer Maps were conceived to meet the needs of passengers on cruise
ships. More and more people are taking to the world's oceans, and cruising
has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for those who like the
comfort and convenience of travelling on a well run floating hotel.
Read
below about some of the maps available in the series which are produced
by PCGraphics (UK) Limited and published by Ocean Explorer.
Antarctica
English,
German and now Japanese versions available
This was the first map in the series. On one side is a map of the Antarctic
Peninsula region, including Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, South
Georgia, South Orkneys, and South Shetlands. On the reverse side there
is a map of the whole Antarctic continent with an enlargement of the Ross
Island region. This map is illustrated with over 30 colour photos, and
is designed to appeal especially to passengers on Antarctic cruises. Special
features include illustrated mini biographies of notable explorers, photos
of Antarctic scenes and wildlife, and five historic routes.
Spitsbergen
(Svalbard)
English
and German versions available
Number two in the series is a visitor's map of the Spitsbergen (Svalbard)
archipelago. Illustrated by over 50 photographs and illustrations, the
map brings to life this land that is a mere 621 miles (1,000 km) from
the North Pole, and whose human inhabitants number no more than about
3,000. As well as an historical section, there are photos and notes on
the plants and animals of Svalbard, which is what most modern visitors
go there for.
South American Explorer
The rich, colourful, and sometimes violent, history of the region is told
by means of an historical time line and mini biographies of the explorers
and other notable people whose deeds fashioned these lands. Other special
features include introductory information on native peoples; colour photos
and text on the wildlife; and a section on glaciers and glacial geology.
Primarily intended for visitors who explore the area in ships, the emphasis
of this map is on popular landing places and geographical features that
are on or near the shore.
Falklands
Detailed map of the Falkland Islands, including a plan of the central
part of Stanley, the capital. Features of the map include an historical
time line, charting the islands' history from their discovery in the 16th
century to the present day. There are also illustrated biographies of
explorers and other notable people who have influenced the archipelago's
history and development.
South Georgia
This visitor's map of South Georgia, including the South Sandwich Islands,
is designed to accompany the Falklands map. This map is designed to appeal
to passengers on adventure cruises that visit the island of South Georgia,
but will also appeal to armchair travellers with an interest in far away
places.
