Royalty free mapping - UK area and district maps

Area or district maps in the UK are created using out of copyright mapping and GPS data before being drawn up using Freehand or Illustrator graphics programmes.

Step 1

Out of copyright mapping is used to create a base map over which we can overlay new information.

We hold out of copyright maps and other sources for the whole of the UK which gives us the basic information we need to begin creating the mapping. All our sources have been scanned and are held as digital data on our systems.

Step 2

We use Garmin GPS receivers on the road to gather new information such as motorways, trunk roads etc and to plot specific points such as service stations or buildings along the routes and to mark up road numbers whilst on the move.

Data is stored in the GPS receivers in the form of waypoints and tracks and gives an accuracy to a few feet depending on the number of satellites visible and the settings selected. Every point tracked or entered into the GPS has its latitude and longitude logged which gives us a precise geographic position for all the information.

Step 3

Back in the office the GPS data is downloaded into our computer systems and converted from latitude and longitude into a format that the graphics programmes can read - usually Freehand or Illustrator files.

This data is then edited and combined with the drawings made from out of copyright sources.

Step 4

Cartographers in the office then apply their expertise and knowledge to the data to create the map. The look and feel of the map depends on many aspects including the final use for the map (whether web based or printed) and the client's own wishes. Web based maps tend to be less detailed to allow for the lower resolution on screen but can be made interactive to link in other maps or images whilst the detail on litho printed maps will depend on the size and scale selected.

Step 5

The next stage is supplying proofs to the client - either in digital form as jpeg or pdf files via email or inkjet proofs at any size up to A0.

Following any amendments by the client we supply the final artwork, again either in digital or paper form.
